Learning a foreign language is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, parents mostly choose to start English language instruction in the first grade, where English is an optional subject. When beginning to learn a foreign language, it is crucial that the language is presented to students in a fun and interesting way, and that students develop a positive attitude towards the language. The teacher plays a significant role in motivating students and selecting motivational resources for foreign language instruction. The content and teaching approaches should interest and motivate students for further language acquisition, while also encouraging interaction with others. As a mediator in communication and a stimulus for expressing oneself in a foreign language, a puppet is an excellent tool that is relatable to students. With its linguistic, relational, and animation potentials, a puppet allows space for imagination and play. The puppet increases motivation and encourages interpersonal interaction, which enhances communicative competence, a key skill in foreign language acquisition. A puppet can be used in storytelling and dramatization, which are traditional methods of language use in the classroom. The puppet and the story facilitate active student participation in the lesson. Through storytelling, students engage directly and explore the authentic use of the foreign language. A study was conducted with first-grade primary school students and their teacher. The research took place over 10 instructional hours, with 3 school hours dedicated to observation and 7 school hours to teaching with the introduced change. The study was conducted in May and June 2022. The research showed that using a puppet during storytelling positively influenced the motivation of first-grade students and their active participation in English lessons, as well as their enjoyment of learning the language. The students eagerly attended their English classes, created puppets, and played with them. It was also observed that the use of the English language and vocabulary increased during puppet lessons. The study's results contribute to understanding the importance of using puppets in storytelling and teaching methods for English language instruction in the early years of primary school. The results of the research indicate that the main objective was achieved - the altered approach successfully encouraged students' active participation in class and their interest in learning English.
