Abstract

Title:Perception of the effectiveness of therapies for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder in Slovenia
Abstract:
The field of autism spectrum disorder (hereinafter ASD) is less developed in Slovenia. After reading the literature and from practical experience, I realized that the field of therapies is very poorly known, even to parents of children and adolescents with ASD. We decided to research therapies and methods of work that are intended for children and adolescents with MAS and thereby offer a structured review of therapies and their effectiveness. In our research 150 parents were included who answered the questions about their children. Our sample included 119 boys (79.3%) and 31 girls (20.7%), aged between 2 and 15 years. The children were diagnosed with MAS at different ages within the health system (in the clinic). We found that the most used therapy is sensory integration and the least used is drama therapy. It turned out that the younger the children and adolescents are involved in a certain therapy the more progress the parents perceive half a year after joining the therapy. We also found that parents perceive learning on the floor (DIR Floortime) as the most effective therapy while dance-movement therapy is the least effective. Our research showed that children and adolescents with MAS have the most problems in the area of social and communication skills. It also turned out that there were no differences in the effectiveness of the therapies between the girls and boys who were included in our research.
