This paper is based on the need to distinguish between the concepts of the Slovene university, the university in Slovene-speaking areas and the global university; the relation between these is a complicated one which, among other things, raises the issue of how to define science or academic knowledge and the role within it of language. However, it is an issue worth considering as the value-based definition of science is changing rapidly - most noticeably where it represents the content of university study. Academic knowledge is becoming a commodity in a market formed by direct competition for profit.
