Abstract
In this study, the materials and techniques used in the colouring of mediaeval Islamic paper from the 10th through 19th centuries were examined, and red- and yellow-coloured historical papers were chemically analysed. The tested colouring method was based on recipes for paper colouring provided in seven unpublished, previously untranslated into English, original Arabic historical sources. Liquid chromatography was used for dye identification. The results of more than 50 recipes from historical sources suggested that ~30 raw materials were used for colouring paper, including four for dyeing paper red and four for dyeing paper yellow. To verify this information, several different techniques were used to extract the dye from the raw material and then reconstruct the dyed paper samples. Preliminary results, obtained using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection, demonstrated the potential of this method to identify the natural dyes historically used for Islamic paper. Henna and madder were identified in two historical paper samples, based on the detection of lawsone and alizarin respectively.
