Makole is a small municipality in the north-eastern part of Slovenia. Despite its small size, it boasts a rich natural and cultural heritage. This master thesis presents the importance of integrating regional geography and history in geography and history lessons in elementary school, using Makole as a case study. The thesis shows that a town, even a small one, can contain enough geographical and historical attractions which can be included in regular geography and history lessons or other activities in elementary schools. In this way, we contribute to a greater interest and easier understanding of geographical and historical content, and a greater responsibility and respect of pupils for the natural and cultural heritage. This was also confirmed by the survey responses of pupils who wanted more hours and activities related to the geography and history of their hometown. Teachers also agreed that studying a hometown is important, but due to the extensive curriculum and lack of time, they rarely choose to address these contents.
