The paper casts light on some aspects of the professional competences of the generation of teachers of Slovene language and literature immediately following the Second World War. It categorises the demands made upon them by new approaches to the teaching of this subject and seeks to identify the reasons for their success. The teachers also had to contend with completely unfamiliar teaching material without the necessary guides, teaching aids and textbooks. A further aim of these personal
observations is to pay tribute to the many teachers whose enthusiasm enabled them, in spite of the many hindrances and difficult conditions, to satisy the most demanding educational goals.
