Abstract

Title:Personality traits, perfectionism and job burnout among social work employees
Abstract:
Since previous research has established that some individuals experience burnout in the same circumstances while others do not, we have try to identify the links between the tendency of the risk of burnout and individual's personality traits. We studied the relationship between burnout and perfectionism, as well as the relation between burnout and three personality traits of the Big Five personality dimensions model (extraversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness) in social care workers. We were also interested in differences in burnout according to levels of interaction with clients, as well as the relation between burnout and the financial income of social care employees. In the theoretical part, we described all the variables and connected them with previous research, while in the empirical part, we determined what kind of connections are evident in the Slovenian population of employees in social care. The survey involved 385 employees in social care in Slovenia. To measure burnout, we used the BAT Burnout Questionnaire, the prevalence of perfectionism was measured with Frost's multidimensional perfectionism scale FMPS, and to measure personality characteristics we used the BFI Big Five Questionnaire. The results of the research show that those employees in social care, who have constant contact with clients, experience higher exhaustion compared to employees who only have partial contact with clients. Based on the obtained results, we also conclude that the higher the income of the employee in social care, the lower the risk of burnout and vice versa. We discovered that the higher the level of perfectionism in a social care employee, the higher the risk of burnout and vice versa. The results of the analysis also show that there is a statistically significant relation between burnout and extraversion, neuroticism and conscientiousness. The higher the expressed personality traits of extraversion and conscientiousness in invidual, the lower the risk of burnout and vice versa. The higher the expressed personality trait neuroticism in individual, the higher the risk of burnout among social care workers and vice versa.
