A short history of the Slovene part of the general matura examination is offered, as well as arguments supporting the way it is structured and the composition of the exam in language and literature. An explanation is given of the theoretical basis and the realisation of some individual parts of the literature exam, as well as how it began and changes to its written and oral parts. Examples of examination tasks and questions are followed by discussion of the reaction that this examination has
always been subject to among the general public, in the media and in academic publications. The concluding thought is that the examination should encourage research and practical implementation of a number of changes in the way literature is taught that should be considered regardless of proposed changes to the structure of the national matura.
