This thesis titled The Citiy in Art explores a theme in art from its earliest inception to its
modern-day interpretations. While examining its various occurrences, I also explored the
meaning a city holds to humans and what makes a city an inherent symbolic icon for
humanity as a whole, from its early mentions in the bible to progressive artists of the
renaissance to the ideas of the future human of the modern day. These ideas I utilized to
deepen my perception of the city in my work, and through three different series of paintings,
I explored what we see in a city, what a city feels to me as an individual, and what a city is
without humanity and industry.
