In its long history, literature has been treated in many different ways: its "essence", specificity, social role and importance, functions and forms in different periods were subject to different understandings and attributions of meaning. The paper discusses why literature has been (and still is) of importance: it emphasizes that the foundation of its importance lies in its specificity, its literariness, reflected by contemporary literary and cultural theory and philosophy as an encounter with otherness.
