Abstract

Abstract:
Helicopter logging is used worldwide the most intensive in USA and Canada, butin Slovenia this kind of logging still has not been used. In thesis we tried to find out which areas are appropriate for this type of logging, what kind of experiences have been collected in foreign countries, what advantages and disadvantages have been identified, what kind of costs originates from helicopter logging and what are speciality in organizing such kind of work. The main advantage of helicopter logging is undamaged soil and logs. Heavy expenses are weakness, which predominate over all advantages. Area we chosen as research object is appropriate for helicopter logging, but we found out that the cost of helicopter hour is too high (if we rent company from Switzerland) and wood's quality is too poor to cover costs. If we make a combination of helicopter from the Slovenian Armed Forces and Swiss ground crew the calculation is positive. Calculation was done in Swiss company HELOG.We identified potentially appropriate areas for helicopter logging with GIS. For unopened areas we selected terrain which is more then 1000 meters away from public and forest road and slope is more then 50%. Slovenia has 20872 ha areas which are appropriate for helicopter logging, of which 50% are in GGO Tolmin.
