Abstract

Title:Neoliberalization of Ljubljana
Abstract:
In the last thirty years, Ljubljana has undergone a comprehensive transformation. The city has become more orderly, lively, and wealthy. While Ljubljana is not the only city to have experienced this type of transformation, we can draw parallels with trends taking hold almost everywhere in the world, which are connected to the expansion of neoliberalism. Each production system and correlated ideology produce their own space, without which they would not be consistent and durable. In my master's thesis, I try to illustrate how neoliberalism transforms cities and how this is reflected – particularly through urban policies – in physical and social space. Since neoliberalism is an elusive concept that always adapts to local circumstances, I start by identifying the main changes that neoliberalism introduces in the production of space and the trends facilitating the implementation of these changes. In the second part of the thesis, I investigate whether these trends are also present in Ljubljana, how they are reflected in urban policies, and what kind of space they produce.
