Abstract

Title:
Understanding the concept of physical literacy and attitude about physical literacy among physiotherapists in Slovenia : master thesis
Abstract:
Introduction: Physical literacy is the skills and attributes individuals demonstrate through physical activity across their life course. Physiotherapy is an integral part of health care system, therefore physiotherapists can influence physical literacy of every patient/user of health care services they interact with. Understanding of physical literacy among healthcare workers, including physiotherapists, is limited. There are no publications describing physical literacy in physiotherapy. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis was to determine the understanding of the concept of physical literacy and attitude about physical literacy among physiotherapists in Slovenia. Since this is a pilot study, it does not contain hypotheses. After the data collection was completed, statistical tests were used to determinate whether there are differences in knowledge of physical literacy according to the various characteristics of the respondents. The reliability of the questionnaire as internal consistency was checked for questions that contained Likert scale with Cronbach's alpha. Methods: Data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire, which was based on already existing questionnaires and adapted to the purpose of our research. The studied population included physiotherapists in Slovenia who are members of Združenje fizioterapevtov Slovenije. The questionnaire was sent via e-mail to the 896 members of Združenje fizioterapevtov Slovenije. The response rate of members as respondents with usable data was 12,5 %. Results: 42,9 % answers showed that the respondents encountered the concept of physical literacy for the first time while reading our questionnaire. The respondets rate their own knowledge of physical literacy as slightly below average to average and have positive attitude towards physical literacy. The lack of time and not understanding the concept are two of the most cited barriers for developing physical literacy. Statistically significant differences exist in the self-assessment of knowledge about the five studied characteristics of physical literacy according to the level of health care in which the respondents work and in the self-assessment of knowledge about the social domain of physical literacy according to the respondents' years of service (p < 0,05). The reliability of the questionnaire as internal consistency, checked with Cronbach's alpha for questions with Likert scale was poor to excellent. Discussion and conclusion: Physiotherapists understand the concept of physical literacy to some extent, but this knowledge is limited. The results show positive attitude towards physical literacy, which is encouraging information for the development of physical literacy in physiotherapy. By making physiotherapists aware of the concept of physical literacy and by developing a suitable measurement tool for assessing physical literacy, barriers could be largely reduced and more optimal conditions for the physical literacy of patients/users of health care services that include physical activity could be provided.
