Abstract

Abstract:
The relationship between the Reformation, Protestantism and modern society is a well-established topic, as is the thesis of their interdependence. Of courseone cannot simplistically identify the Reformation as the cause nor origin of modern society or capitalism. Nevertheless, modern society and the characteristics of its western developed form certainly did not arise without Christian religious stimuli and support, which came primarily from Protestant Christianity. The paper illustrates the influence of Protestant concepts on the formation of work ethic, institutionalised individualism, and modern sciences. It pays specific attention to Protestant understanding and terminology for secular activities as a calling or vocation, and to renderingsof relevant passages (Ecclesiasticus, 11:20-21, 1 Corinthians, 7:20-24) in Slovene translations of the Bible.

Keywords:Reformation, Protestantism, modern society, calling, predestination, Bible (Slovene translations)
