Due to fast pace of life that we live in, life takes us through
the trials that mark our lives. Diseases and injuries have
become a part of our lives, and we require medical
attention.
The healthcare problem is increasing all over the world and therefore a different and more innovative approach is
needed.
Over time, the technology for different types of therapy has improved, but the facilities where the injured stay have remained the same. Most facilities are hospital-based, so patients do not wish to return to rehabilitation centres. Dark, long corridors, shared rooms, limited light and un-aesthetic common areas - this is what rehabilitation centres across Slovenia are like today.
This master thesis is an attempt to adapt the rehabilitation centre. The basis is the integration of the rehabilitation
programme with nature and the focus is on the satisfaction of patients, who feel at home in the centre.
Most rehabilitation facilities are scattered around Slovenia. Fewer are located in Ljubljana, which has the largest
population. Due to the distance from the city centre, many injured patients who are recommended for rehabilitation do not choose to go to health resort. For some, this is a problem because they are away from their families and their work. The issue is also the solitude and loneliness in the rehabilitation centre itself.
The thesis focuses on a specific location in Ljubljana with
access to the city centre. The centre aims to offer the
possibility of accompanying patients, enabling contact with nature and ensuring pleasant spaces for patients to socialize.
Programme-wise, the master thesis focuses on innovative ways of treating patients after an injury. All programmes are nature oriented and do not try to conjure up a hospital atmosphere.
At the same time, the centre offers opportunities for
different generations to live together and help each other.
The urban design concept integrates all the programmes, which are largely related to the exterior design, that creates an orderly space and at the same time provides a social iteration.
