In my master's thesis, I examined and combined the previous findings of the authors in the field of singing and vocal expression in musical arts assistance. I reviewed and analyzed relevant study material.
I defined the historical and developmental aspect of singing and vocal expression, and presented psychotherapeutic content that is important for the field. Based on this, I have placed singing and vocal expression within the field of modern musical arts assistance. I described the structure and operation of the voice apparatus, and precisely defined the characteristics of the voice. In the following, I defined the role of breathing in singing, while also describing the functioning of the respiratory system and different ways of breathing. Individual methods are presented in more detail within the framework of musical arts assistance, in which the voice is used as the primary means of expression. I presented the leading methods (Voice Movement Therapy and Vocal Psychotherapy) in the chosen field, as well as some other methods (Werbeck singing, alternative methods of theraputic use of voice), which are not directly considered to be a form of musical arts assistance, however, they use voice as a primary means of expression, have therapeutic effects and are complementary to the field. I also described the clinical use of singing and vocal expression in the context of musical arts assistance, where I presented the use in different clinical environments and with different populations (babies, premature babies and their parents; the elderly and people with dementia; chronic patients; children and adolescents; persons with autism spectrum disorders; mentally ill; hospice clients). Finally, on the basis of the reviewed literature, I defined the difference between singing as an artistic expression and singing in the context of musical arts assistance.
My focus in the discussion was to compare individual methods. Complementary methods (Werbeck singing, alternative methods of therapeutic use of voice) were placed within the process of musical arts assistance. In the appendix, I have added a list of literature from the field of singing and vocal expression in the context of musical arts assistance, which contains sources used in the master's thesis and unused sources.
