Characterisation of cutting tool wear and life is a demanding process, which has a direct
influence on the quality of manufacturing process and is of big importance in case of large
manufacturing series. Modern (CNC) machine shops seek to determine when the
manufacturing process is inefficient due to tool wear based on measurable and repeatable
tests. Throughout the master thesis we presented a way to accurately determine the tool life
of a lathe tool bit using the frequency spectrum analysis of accelerations. Using different
tools of spectrum analysis, we successfully extended the use of available tool life and
presented a test, which is repeatable and applicative independent of turning parameters.
