The thesis evaluates the voice in its many forms as they appear in popular music. We initially set up an operational framework and analyze popular music through the aspects of terminology, aesthetics, value judgments and meaning. In the second part we deal with the phenomenon of the voice, which we attempt to explain in terms of vocal technique, the influence of music technology on the voice and the voice’s influence on music technology; meaning of the voice and the aesthetics of the voice, and finally we define it in relation to the concepts of identity and persona. The last part of the thesis is a case study which analyses the music of the Slovenian singer Oto Pestner. This is achieved through the analysis of the singer’s placement in music history, analysis of the singing style and supposed musical influences and lastly with an analysis with the help of interpretative voice research techniques.
