Abstract

Abstract:
A national survey on reading culture and book purchases, which the Slovenian Book Agency conducted in 2019, showed declining reading habits among young people. To verify whether they are truly reading increasingly less, a survey on the reading habits of secondary-school students from southeast Slovenia was carried out in February and March 2022. The questionnaire was completed by 250 students, and additional interviews were conducted with six students. It was established that most young people generally like to read, but they do not like required reading at school because they feel forced to read and find the books boring. Moreover, secondary-school students read more during the pandemic, but their access to books was encumbered. After the pandemic, their reading habits again declined, with many students reporting that they do not have enough time to read.
