This thesis offers a review of all documented Roman villas in western Slovenia, which belonged since Augustan age to Roman Regio X of ancient Italy. Their descriptions varied according to the state and extent of their research. The thesis also suggests a typology which is based on multiple factors like their size, geographical and topographic location, characteristics of their ground plans and potential economic functions of each individual site. The typology represents an improvement from classifying Roman villas in traditional types as villa rustica, villa maritima and villa suburbana, because it allows a more complex typological and functional interpretation of the sites and the inclusion of other rural building types, for example villae-mansiones and production centers.
