The master's thesis explores the feeling of home among expats who decided in their adulthood to move from their primary environment. It presents some of the main elements of what home means to individuals. The focus is on the feelings of home (both positive and negative), how these are constantly changing and the state of foreignness in which emigrants find themselves – a state in which they no longer feel truly at home anywhere. It studies return mobilities, especially return visits and the reactions of the surroundings. In doing so, it also touches the concept of cosmopolitanism and the multi-sensory experience at home. It also explores how individuals create a home for themselves and what, if any, objects are important.
