The Illyrian provinces prominently featured in the correspondence of Vodnik, Zois and Kopitar. They were important to them because of the political changes and the empowerment of the Slovene language. Predominantly, their views were articulated in commentaries, but in more turbulent periods they moved them from the closing remarks to the forefront of their letters. The discussions surrounding the Illyrian provinces held between themselves and other contemporaries etched their mark on the popular consciousness, mainly due to the changes in legislation, tensions and the resulting peasant uprisings.
