This thesis illustrates the emergence of the cottagecore movement on the web and describes
the reasons for increased interest in it in the wake of the widespread Covid-19 pandemic.
The movement appears on the app in the form of short clips showing well-dressed people
moving through nature and rural spaces, often with a basket full of flowers or eggs in hand.
The clips can also show different forms of manual skills – from crocheting and embroidery to
cooking and baking pastries.
The assignment focuses on the themes of capitalism, ecology, conflicting personalities and
social rights associated with the movement, and the realism of life that the videos on the TikTok
app depict. In addition to the literature, a more detailed perspective of community members is
provided through interviews of five users and one creator of cottagecore content on the TikTok
app.
