The thesis attempts to shed light on the difference between Mann's novella Die Betrogene and Klaus Handel's libretto for the opera Blühen by Vito Žuraj. In the first part, the literary-historical context of Mann's work and a thematic analysis of the selected novella are presented; in the second part, the operatic and librettist traditions are described, with a brief description of their development and influence on the creation of contemporary works; and in the third part, a comparison is made with regard to the scenes and events of the original novella and the adapted work. Opera is a musical medium that has a long tradition and is attractive to many composers, and the question often arises as to what its future path will be and how the libretto can evolve with it.Thematically, the novella under consideration deals with themes of femininity, menstruation and menopause, which were highly controversial at the time of the novella's creation and remain important today. The librettist remained faithful to the basic idea and themes, but nevertheless made a few changes that influenced the final development and fate of the characters.
