In this thesis, I focused on the impact of the ancient Asian philosophy called Confucianism
and the Korean culture it shaped on the LGBT community in contemporary South Korean
society, particularly on individuals of same-sex orientation. I explored potential factors
influencing society's opinions on homosexuality, identifying the most prevalent factors in the
case of South Korea and how they manifest themselves. Additionally, I elucidated the current
socio-political situation of the LGBT community in Korea. Subsequently, I centred my
attention on the influence of Confucianism itself and highlighted the principles that formed
the basis of Korean society, which emphasize heterosexual couples and growing up in an
environment where men and women are constantly present. I delved into the emphasis of
same-sex social relationships characteristic of Confucianism and how this concept is also
reflected in modern South Korea through the entertainment industry.
