The master's thesis presents a conservation-restoration proposal for the intervention on the painting Počitek by Rihard Jakopič. The artwork was created using oil paints on hemp canvas without a ground layer. The introductory part discusses conservation-restoration topics with an emphasis on ethics, reconstruction, and copying. This is followed by some insights into the artist behind the artwork, the painting technique, and the motif. The practical part of the thesis is based on eleven technological studies, including one at the original size and the others as smaller details. With them, we demonstrated the technology of the artwork's creation, tested materials, and proposed conservation-restoration interventions for the original. Analyses of the fibre of the support and the binder of the original painting's paint layer were performed in addition, to studying the degradation of materials for the filling of colour layers on one of the details. The challenge lay in the consolidation and the filling of gaps in the painting, where the canvas was not covered with paint, either due to the artist's intention or because of damage and missing paint layers. With the help of studies, we proposed possibilities for conservation and restoration, while vividly presenting a cultural heritage fragment and its preservation significance to the wider public.
