In this master thesis, I explore how the emotion of fear is expressed in sculpture. Before we can feel an emotion, we need to perceive a stimulus, so first I briefly mention the senses and perception. I define what emotions are and have a deeper look at fear and fear in children. As phobias are an extremely heightened form of fear, I also introduce the most common ones. Throughout the history of art, artists have exploited the emotion of fear as one of the most powerful emotional levers. Several different theorists and artists have written about this, some of whom I mention in my master's thesis. I explore how fear is expressed in sculpture through the work of different artists. Throughout the history of art, the emotion of fear has been expressed in different ways in all fields, but as this field covers a vast history, I have focused my choice of sculptors mainly on artists who have strongly influenced the development of my own artistic identity. I have also had the opportunity to see some of their sculptures in person and have thus experienced them in a holistic way. I also present some of my own sculptures. In the empirical part of this thesis, I explore the reflection of fear in children's artistic expression in sculpture.
