Modern competitive dances are widespread in Slovenia and dancers achieve top results at the international level. In the last six years Slovenian dancers won 223 medals in jazz, modern and show categories alone. Because the least amount of research has been done in Slovenia in their area until now, we wanted to obtain data on the occurrence of injuries and prepare a set of preventive exercises for the most common ones.
Through an online survey through the 1ka portal, we obtained cross-sectional data on dancers, their activity and injuries. We analyzed them with Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS. 94 male and female dancers from all over Slovenia took part in the survey, with an average age of 16 2.2 years. On average, they had trained in dance for 10 2.3 years, and none for less than 6 years.
73.4% of them suffered at least 1 injury during their dancing career. The majority of injuries (65%) were suffered on the soft tissues of the lower extremities, and the most common among them was sprained ankle. Based on the obtained data and recommendations from foreign research, we have prepared a preventive set of exercises for the most common injuries in jazz and modern dancers. Regardless of the incidence of injuries in each group (club), we recommend using these exercises as part of the regular training process and injury prevention.
