The aim of the work was to measure the body measurements, body weight and describe
the type traits of rams of the Jezersko-Solčava breed and the Improved Jezersko-Solčava
breed. The measurements were performed on a total of 88 rams in July 2020 at the PRC
Logatec ram test station. We measured 45 rams of the Jezersko-Solčava breed and 43
rams of the Improved Jezersko-Solcava breed at the time of completion of the direct
test. We measured wither height, body length, chest girth, tail length and ear length. In
addition, we described tail length in relation to the hock joint, ear position, wool colour,
head markings, and horns. Based on the body measurements, we calculated
morphometric indices for the animals, namely: index of body frame or index of length
(ITO), index of thorax development (IRPK), index of conformation (IK) and index of
body weight (ITM). The wither height of the measured rams of the Jezersko-Solčava
breed (JS) was 55.74 cm and that of the rams of the Improved Jezersko-Solčava breed
(JSR) was 53.10 cm. Body length from withers to ischium was 67.97 cm (JS) and 66.41
cm (JSR), chest girth 79.57 cm (JS) and 81.22 cm (JSR), tail length 44.17 cm (JS) and
28.54 cm (JSR), and ear length 14.74 cm (JS) and 12.51 cm (JSR). The index of body
frame was 122.09 (JS) and 125.30 (JSR), the index of thorax development was 143.04
(JS) and 153.34 (JSR), the index of conformation was 113.87 (JS) and 124.67 (JSR) and
the index of body weight was 88.00 (JS) and 92.69 (JSR). As expected, JSR rams were
larger than JS rams and had shorter tails and ears, but they had larger chest girth and
higher chest development index and body weight index than JS rams.
