Abstract

Title:Roman Tarsatica
Abstract:
Tarsatica was a Roman town founded in the 1st century, located in the area of the present-day Croatian town of Rijeka. It had three phases of urbanisation, which I will present in more detail in this thesis, using examples of important buildings that have survived for each phase. For the first phase I will mention the public bath and the town house. In the second phase, the town was incorporated into the defensive system of the Claustra Alpium Iuliarum, which led to the construction of the town walls and the barrier walls. At this time, the public baths were also being rebuilt. Of particular interest from this period is the alleged principium, which I will discuss in more detail in this thesis. As third phase, I will present the last phase of the Roman Tarsatica, which is represented by an early Christian basilica. I will also present the various theories and views that archaeologists and other scholars have developed in the course of their research.
