In this thesis I will present in more detail the practice of reuse of spolia in ancient Rome and its artistic, aesthetic, social, ideological and political implications, with an emphasis on the example of Constantine's triumphal arch. I will begin by presenting the concept of spolia or of their art historical understanding. Next, I will define ancient spolia in the context of war booty and reuse practices during the period of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. I will present interpretations of the practice of reuse based on the retrospective perception of the phenomenon. I will apply the findings to the example of Constantine's triumphal arch and present in more detail the social, political, economic and artistic circumstances of the creation of perhaps the most famous example of gender reuse.
