The thesis presents the transition of Japanese clothing from indigenous costumes to Western clothing and the chronological changing of styles, trends, kimmono and ideologies from the early to the end of the Meiji period. It is described, how Japan transitioned from being an isolated and backward country in the Edo period, to the beginning of modernisation and westernisation in the Meiji period. In addition, the changing of the fashion industry is also discussed, and it includes the dye industry, the textile industry, department stores, advertising and magazines, and the emergance and develoment of tailoring. At the end it is described, what the reactions of Japanese and Westerners were to these changes.
