Phthalates are nowadays in numerous products as they are used as plasticizers. They can also be found in cosmetics, pharmaceutical coatings, textiles, food contact materials and even in food as they leach from the containers since they are not chemically bound to plastic materials. Humans are widely exposed to them since birth therefore in the past couple of years there has been an increase in research of exposure and their harmful effects. These are so-called human biomonitoring studies which include different matrixes, most commonly used are urine and blood. Since blood sampling is too invasive for the youngest population, babies. That is why we have decided for determining phthalate metabolites and their replacement biomarkers in human breast milk since this is main source of the babies’ exposure.
