Abstract

Title:Comparative analysis of hedge forms and plant composition in selected districts in Ljubljana
Abstract:
The purpose of the research was to determine plant species and types of linear (hedge) plantings in Ljubljana at selected micro locations in Rožna dolina and Murgle. The two locations were approximately the same size, we examined the plantings in the front gardens of 33-48 houses. The plant species were determined using the Pl@ntNet™ application and the identification of plant samples according to the literature. On the field, we defined the types of contact between public and private space (fence, planting or combination of both) and analyzed hedge plantings in detail (formal or informal hedges, height - related to the level of privacy, foliage of plant species – evergreen or deciduous and plant species). We highlighted well-designed and maintained examples of both types of plantings and listed and described the most typical shrubs that form them. In Murgle and Rožna dolina neighborhoods, we described the diversity of plant species planted in hedge plantings and identified the reasons for the different types, heights and style of plantings. In Rožna dolina, combinations of contact between private and public space prevail (wooden, metal fence with planting of taller shrubs), while in Murgle, lower shaped hedges between plot boundaries are most common. In Rožna dolina there are several tall linear plantings, mostly consisting of deciduous species with an emphasis on the density of foliage. Typical evergreen species (laurel, juniper, spruce, yew) were also frequent. In Murgle, plant diversity is higher, more flowering shrubs and more shrubs with interesting fruits can be seen in plantings. In addition to previously listed evergreen species, we also identified hydrangea, hibiscus and weigela. The differences in linear plantings between the two districts can be attributed to different type and urban design of single-family buildings in the neighborhoods.
