My thesis raises the question of the construction of the Venetian maritime empire – Stato da
Mar – and the question of the way of establishing and maintaining relations between Venice
and its overseas territories in the 12th and 13th centuries. These centuries are important starting points for the building of the later colonial empire. The institutional framework upon which the empire later built was established in the 13th century. During this period, the cultural and ideological patterns that were established and were then further evolved in the 13th century, manifested inthematerial inthelaterperiods,most visiblyinurbanenvironments. Byanalyzing cultural patterns that are manifested in various spheres (norms, values, behavior, clothing, architecture, art, common life), we can make a research of the material reality in a certain period. The 12th and 13th centuries constitute the period when (for the most part) these cultural patterns began to influence the cultures of the local population of the overseas territories.
