The paper presents the transition from conventional dictionary definitions which are based on the Aristotelian tradition of defining through a genus proximum / differentia specifica pair, to the type of description of language reality which stems from the analysis of the definition discourse and includesthe characteristic syntactic and collocational environment of the headword, along with the general semantic dimension.
