In the novels Severni sij, 1895, potres and Ločil bom peno od valov the provincial town transcends the frame of Bakhtin's concept of chronotope. The town thereby fulfils the role of the protagonist or antagonist, depending on the perception of other literary characters in the certain moment of their life. The town is also marked by its borders, which represent not only the geographical but also symbolical lines of separation which represent the challenge of the transition to a new life. With the personification of place the narrative strategy is employed, which loosens the sentimentality of the love story.
