The thesis studies the human perception of open space, presents different principles of open space
design, and explores their impact on human well-being. In the theoretical part, the thesis refers to the
literature, where authors describe several principles for designing spaces that respond to human needs in
space and creating a sense of community. Principles for designing open spaces encourage social interaction
and invite residents to use them. In the project part, the thesis tackles the problem of a degraded area in the
center of Rotterdam, more specifically the Feyenoord area. In the Feyenoord area, a new neighborhood is
therefore designed according to the principles addressed in the theoretical part. Perception at eye level, or
how we perceive space when we walk through it, plays a key role in the composition of the conceptual design
