Open data plays an extremely important role in modern times and is therefore crucial for the future. It is important to realise that it can be useful for the progress of society, but only if we know how to use it well. There are several questions about the importance and benefits of open data and its use by the population. We are also interested in how Slovenia can improve its position in the field of open data and how to encourage local governments to publish as much of their data as possible on the national OPSI portal.
We have approached the problem through theory and empirical research. The empirical research used a quantitative method and was divided into two parts: a questionnaire and an interview. The questionnaire was sent to the e-mail address of all municipalities in the Republic of Slovenia, and the interview was conducted with two representatives of Open Data.
The thesis concludes that open data is multifaceted and important for society in terms of ensuring transparency and implementing new innovations. The analysis of Slovenia's position in comparison to certain European countries showed that a lot of effort has already been put in, but now it is necessary to focus even more on the user experience and to involve all interested users in the process itself. By analysing the survey, we wanted to get closer to the municipalities and obtain information that could be of great benefit. Based on the responses, the Open Data team can create plans to encourage local governments to publish the data, which in turn will have an impact on the wider public.
