Image registration plays an important role in medical imaging. In combination with patient data, it is possible to obtain additional clinical information that is not otherwise visible on the images. This is why it is necessary to find the spatial relationship between the images. The alignment of two images can be done using Elastix software.
In my thesis I described the basic working principle of this equipment, the approach to registration and how I approached it to get optimum results. I have also described and explained the parameters used. Since all of the above also applies to brain MR images, I have devoted part of the thesis to explaining what MR imaging is, and since I have also registered brain images from Alzheimer's patients, there is some more about Alzheimer's disease.
I used a rigid and non-rigid registration. I have successfully registered images of healthy brains and Alzheimer's brains by visual assessment, but I still think it would be possible to get even better results.
I was pleased with the results of the work, but most of all I found the learning and experience of the Elastix software valuable.
