The Effects of Using Literature in an EFL Grammar School Classroom

Abstract
This master's thesis aims to present the broad value of including English literature in EFL classrooms as well as EFL grammar school classrooms in particular. The paper is divided into four chapters, three of which are theoretical, while the fourth is both theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical chapters I focus on the various approaches to literary texts in EFL classrooms, what effects these texts can have on the learners’ abilities (linguistic proficiency, creative expression, autonomy, motivation and intercultural competence) as well as how to implement literary texts in the EFL classroom in a learner-centred way. The last part of the thesis, which is both theoretical and empirical, contains a thorough analysis of a learner questionnaire that was conducted at a Slovenian grammar school and tackles the attitudes of learners to literary texts used in the EFL classroom. The analysis of the questionnaire was conducted in accordance with the theoretical basis that was established throughout this paper.

Title:Učinki uporabe literature pri tujejezikovnem pouku angleščine v gimnaziji
Abstract:
V magistrskem delu obravnavam uporabo angleške književnosti pri poučevanju angleščine kot tujega jezika, z dodatnim poudarkom na uporabi literarnih besedil na gimnazijski stopnji. Besedilo je razdeljeno na štiri poglavja, tri so teoretična in eno teoretično-empirično. V teoretičnih poglavjih predstavim različne pristope do literarnih besedil, kakšne učinke imajo taka besedila na sposobnosti učencev (znanje angleškega jezika, kreativno izražanje, avtonomija, motivacija in medkulturne kompetence) ter kako se lahko literarna besedila vključi pri poučevanju angleščine kot tujega jezika. V teoretično-empiričnem poglavju se osredotočim na analizo ankete z ene izmed slovenskih gimnazij, ki prikazuje odnos učencev do uporabe literarnih besedil pri pouku angleščine. Anketa je bila analizirana v skladu s teoretsko osnovo, predstavljeno na podlagi relevantne citirane literature.
