The thesis examines and presents the emergence of neoliberal tendencies at the broader societal level, in adult education and sustainable development, and in the interaction of all the three areas. The topic is addressed in three theoretical chapters. In the first part, we present the history of neoliberalism and what Mont Pèlerin society's unwritten agenda in the 1980s was supposed to be. The historical analysis and the "classical" derivations of the neoliberal authors are complemented by contemporary concepts. In the first half of the second part, we touch upon neoliberal tendencies in education in general, going through the themes of human capital, managerial discourse, and neoliberal subjectivity. The second half of the chapter is more specifically characterised by adult education, where we present international and national trends in the field through existing analyses. In the last theoretical chapter, we first touch upon environmental issues and present them. We then establish a field of critique of the concept of sustainable development. Finally, we touch upon the link between sustainable development and adult education, where, on the basis of the previous chapters, we conclude that neoliberal tendencies are present in the concept and in the associated adult education. We also draw conclusions about the influence exerted over the field by international organisations that give priority to the economic sphere and relegate the environmental and social dimensions to the periphery. In the discussion, we present the possibility of further developing the theoretical basis for the formulation of an analytical model and subsequent research.
