This Bachelor’s thesis studies the figure of the midwinter mask parkelj, it’s history and
development, other traditions related to it, their appearance in folk tales, as well as their
purpose and meaning.
We shall delve into character design and mask making, ethnographic illustration and the
psychology of the ugly and horrific.
The project covers topics of models in illustration, concept art, character design, non-fiction
and ethnographic illustration.
Our questions are whether we can, through knowledge of the past, connected to the
development of the parkelj, create a mask, which maintains the purpose of the figure and is
appropriate for the modern time and whether, as a folk mask it needs to be made out of
traditional materials.
