Abstract

Title:POLLUTION OF THE GULF OF TRIESTE
Abstract:
The topic of the master's thesis deals with the problem of pollution of the Gulf of Trieste, especially its Slovenian part, which is caused to the greatest extent by humans. In the first chapter, which follows the introduction, the Gulf of Trieste is briefly presented. The NUMO program is presented in the next chapter. The thesis then deals with two major chapters, namely the key properties of the marine environment, which includes its physico-chemical properties, habitats and biological characteristics, and marine pollution, where the different types of pollution that can be detected in this area and their consequences are presented. The last chapter briefly summarizes the content of the pollution of this area of the northern Adriatic by maritime transport and the legislation related to the aforementioned issue. In the conclusion, my opinion and findings or insights are given. The findings reveal that on the entire coast of the Gulf of Trieste there is no area in which man has not interfered with his activities. Mainly due to maritime transport the situation in our sea is assessed as bad, as far as the presence of pollutants in it is concerned, namely at the expense of excessive concentrations of tributyltin - TBT in it, and that the underwater noise is excessive in front of and inside the port of Koper. The findings reveal also that the seabed is damaged by the use of various fishing gear and by the anchoring of larger and smaller maritime vessels, that the resuspension of sediment produced in the Gulf of Trieste also as a result of maritime transport, together with physical damage to the seabed, affects habitat types, fauna and flora of the seabed and, consequently, the fish population and archaeological remains, and that some areas are already heavily polluted with solid waste, but fortunately there is a slight downward trend in their amount.
