As part of my master’s thesis, I first prepared six 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic
liquids with carboxylate counterions by anion exchange. Water was then titrated into each
pure ionic liquid in 5 µL aliquots, while the heat flux was measured by isothermal titration
calorimetry (ITC) and integrated over time to obtain the enthalpy change due to the
addition of water. The enthalpies of mixing of the ionic liquids with water were calculated
based on the experimental results. All ionic liquids have negative enthalpies of mixing
over the entire concentration range, although the depth of their minima was shallower for
the compounds containing anions with longer alkyl chains. In the last part of my thesis, I
attempted to simulate the 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexanoate/water system using
PC-SAFT.
