Abstract

Title:Evaluation of teaching cards with examples of injuries and aliments for exercises regarding the rapid trauma survey : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: One of the methods of first aid training involves the use of training cards with examples of injuries and illnesses for trauma rapid survey, with the aim of ensuring that trainees learn the procedure. Examination of an injured person involves several steps that allow a comprehensive assessment of the condition and rapid action in the event of an accident or sudden illness. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the use of trauma case cards in first aid training exercises to teach trauma rapid survey of injured and ill persons and to formulate suggestions for improvement. The aim is to examine satisfaction with the use of the cards from the perspective of students and practitioners, to formulate suggestions for improvement and to produce a new improved version of the cards. Methods: A critical review of the English and Slovenian scientific literature in the field of first aid was carried out, focusing on the examination of the injured person after the first aid. A qualitative method of work was used in the thesis, namely action research, which was carried out in two cycles with four phases: problem definition, intervention planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Three practitioners, two female doctors who regularly encounter emergencies in their work, 28 students from the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana and 30 students from the Faculty of Pharmacy in Ljubljana participated in the study. The cards were used to conduct a trauma rapid survey of an injured person, after which the students evaluated the use of the cards according to the method. Both the existing version of the cards and the improved (upgraded) version were evaluated. Results: The key suggestions from students and experts for improvements to the existing version of the cards were: adding pictures of injuries, patient position or pictures of the injured person to better understand and present the situation, more detailed description of injuries, symptoms, visible wounds and patient well-being, and adding more complex cases, different cases of injuries and sudden illnesses, which were taken into account in the development of the new version of the cards. In addition, we have added a triage category to each card. Discussion and conclusion: The aim of this research is to help students learn these procedures in an interesting way and to be able to use them in practical first aid practice. There is also potential to promote the use of the cards outside the faculty.
