Abstract
Knjižničarji nimajo težav z infrastrukturo in opremo.

Title:Media Literacy and Slovenian Public Libraries
Abstract:
We researched the state of media literacy education activities in Slovenian public libraries. We were interested in activities that Slovenian public libraries organize to strengthen their customers’ media literacy, the challenges they face, and the results of their efforts. We chose the topic because of the increase in fake and substandard media content. With the growth of the use of social media which has become a thread of democratic society, public libraries which traditionally played the role of information and community centers have lots of potential for work in the field of media literacy. We gathered data with a survey and half-structured interviews. 54 librarians from different Slovenian public libraries participated in the survey and 4 in interviews. The research took place from October to December 2021. We gathered data about activities done in the years from 2016 to 2020. Our research showed that librarians in Slovenian public libraries are aware of the importance of the role they play in the field of media literacy education but are often challenged by the misunderstanding of other stakeholders. Most activities take place in the form of lectures, debates, and direct work with patrons. We detected a misunderstanding of the concept of media literacy which often gets mistaken for computer and information literacy. Librarians reported no problems regarding the equipment and infrastructure that they need for media literacy education activities. For progress in this field, there is a need to develop a practical model for media literacy education that could be applied in public libraries.
