Abstract

Title:Approaches to the replacement of missing parts and conservation-restoration intervention on a wooden polychrome sculpture of the Jokajoči angel from National gallery
Abstract:
The BA thesis titled Approaches to the replacement of missing parts and conservation-restoration intervention on a polychrome wood sculpture Jokajoči angel (The Weeping Angel) from National Gallery of Slovenia consists of a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part presents an overview of methods and materials, both traditional and contemporary, that can be used in the reintegration of the missing parts of wooden support. Multiple methods are discussed in this part of the thesis, such as mold and casting manufacturing methods, 3D digitization methods (3D scanning and 3D printing) and subtractive technologies (CNC). The second part dives deeply into the conservation-restoration treatment of the wooden statue Jokajoči angel. Methods of consolidation, cleaning, filling, gilding and retouching are firstly described. Furthermore, the methods for reintegrating the lost parts of the support are implemented in practice. 3D printing with vat photopolymerization (DLP) technology is identified as the most appropriate method and polymethyl methacrylate is chosen as the 3D-printing material. In the final stage of the intervention, the missing parts are placed on the statue using magnets.
