Abstract

Title:
Caterpillar (Influence of the image of nature)
Abstract:
My thought about the caterpillar sculpture comes from the idea of thinking and fantasy about creating a new world where everything is the opposite of the reality we know. I wanted to emphasize the recognizable features of a creature and change it to become a mirror of reality. In my diploma, I touched on the topic of imitation and transformation of the image of animals from nature. I researched how imitation began in the first place and how it progressed, developed through the thoughts of various intellectuals and philosophers. I connected this with the history of art and looked for the connection between man and animal. I also connected the topic with anthropocentrism, where man thinks he is the center of the whole world. I chose the caterpillar sculpture for several reasons. It represents growth and change in life, as the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly and has a different, new life. She sees the world through two distinct phases of life and perception in her limited life cycle on earth. With the size of the sculpture, I changed the innocence of the small caterpillar from nature and placed it in a space where it can be admired in a different way. Now it is the role of the viewer to decide whether this caterpillar is close to him as an image of the familiar or not.
