Abstract

Title:Stanko Vurnik as an art historian
Abstract:
Stanko Vurnik (born 1898) was a slovene art historian, ethnologist, and musicologist during the interwar period. The final seminar paper focuses on trying to decipher Vurnik's work in relation to the field of art history, which has previously not been fully highlighted in the realm of the relevant discipline. After the initial biographical exploration of Vurnik's life and work, the paper offers an inside look into his understanding of the art system, through which it also aims to take a look at Vurnik's own values. At its core, the paper tries to analyze the purely art-historical work of Stanko Vurnik, whether it be through reflecting on his scientific research contributions to the field or his applied use of the knowledge the discipline holds and its methodology. The paper also looks at his education in the field of art history under Izidor Cankar and highlights the importance of it, as it pertains to his scientific and non-scientific work inside as well as outside the discipline. The study is therefore concluded by taking a look at Vurnik's ethnological work in its relation to the field of art history and its then methodology.
